  1. Gerald S Says:

    Don’t start a business you know nothing about. Work for one to learn the ropes and then decide.

  2. dkarlsenyh Says:

    I’ve never heard of such a thing. Have you? If you have, then you should ask them.

    Since we have things like Yahoo Answers, Google, and the like, don’t you think technology has advanced a bit too far for this type of business?

    Isn’t Yahoo itself an information broker?

    Haven’t you already missed the train by about 20 years?

  3. imisidro Says:

    An information broker tracks down and locates the specific information a business, organization or client needs. If you engage in this business, your task is to find, organize, analyze and package information in a way that makes it meaningful and relevant to a client.

    You may specialize in certain types of information, such as market research, law, statistics, real estate research or scientific data. A partial list of some of the research projects that require the services of an information broker include:

    - To do background research about a new product concept;
    - To carry out a patent search on a product they want to introduce;
    - To learn about companies producing related products and determine their pricing or find out as much as possible about a new market.
    - To research about client’ competitors in their industries.
    - To conduct real estate title searches, as well as information about original cost, annual tax liability relating to specific parcels of land

    I recommend getting a copy of the book “Start Your Own Information Broker Service: Business” http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0136033172/powerhomebizguid to give you more ideas about starting an information broker business

    You do not start that kind of business until you have years of wxpwrience working in the field and learning/ Good money if you are good at it.

  5. Alfred Glossbrenner Says:

    Imisidro has it exactly right. As you can see, things go way beyond what’s possible using Yahoo!, Google, and the like. As an IB, you’ll have to master pay services like DIALOG and Nexis, two entities most online users today have never heard of.

    Your biggest challenge will be persuading potential customers that you can indeed deliver information that is far superior than what they themselves can pull up using free services.

    Note: The late Sue Rugge, founder of the profession, always suggested that new IBs form a team, with one person for sales and marketing and the other for doing the actual searches and report preparation.

    I would consult with someone with prior knowledge of starting up a a business broker. Research and learn as much from someone who is knowledgeable in the subject and move forward from there.
