What is Most Important in a Home Based Business Start Up?

Three Critical Steps For a Work at Home Business Success
By Tana A Hamiter

What are the most important aspects of running a work at home business or an internet/web business?

That can be a very viable question considering most people spend more time thinking over what car to purchase than they ever do on what business to start up, who to work with, how to get training, what support is available and in what forms, and more. Too many people make choices on emotion or pressure than on research and business considerations. Hopefully this article will give you some tools while considering before you leap.

As an Online Business Mentor, these are some of the questions I ask people to go through before I make any suggestions; we make plans or finalize any decisions.

First: Why do you want to go into business? There are more reasons than fish in the sea. Perhaps to give financial stability to the family as we all are aware of how unstable jobs, even careers are in today’s world. What about wanting extra cash for college funds, to pay off credit cards and get a substantial savings for that rainy day (for as sure as sun follows rain, rain follow sun – that is life’s cycle). Do you have adequate insurance or money for those unexpected medical bills that can wipe a financially solid family off the map or perhaps retirement – you want more than what your current retirement plans will provide. We could go on and on about the WHY, the important thing is that you are WHY is strong enough to keep you moving through those start up years.

Did you notice I didn’t say start up weeks or even months? Yes, for a chosen few who have large amounts of capital to throw into a business and who have a huge sphere of influence of comfortably well to do friends or co-workers (usually from a previous business together), they can have success faster. But for real people with average or even above average means, it takes time and anyone who tells you otherwise is the only one who is going to make good money and it will be off of YOU!

Second: Looking at your abilities and assets – for example willingness to follow a discipline that you will set up (when you have a job and you decide not to work, you get fired. When you are your own boss, you have either business failure or a business lull). Do you have any computer skills? If you don’t that is totally fine as long as you are willing to learn. The technological revolution is changing day by day, it is not something you learn once and say: “Great, glad I’m done learning”.

How much time will you consistently put into YOUR business each week? Notice Consistently! How much money do you have available to invest into your Business and how much money on credit do you have available if needed. Be conservative here, realistic but conservative. Many people lose because like kids at Christmas they saw ‘pie in the sky’ and risked more than they should have. Even choosing what type of business depends on these answers.

Do you have a spouse, children, job or other responsibilities that need to be figured into the plan? Also what experience if any have you had in any type of work at home business of your own as well as your work history? The more I know about you the more appropriate any suggestions I make will be.

And what do you see as obstacles to overcome? Let’s get it all out on the table, from financial, health, family, learning challenges, moving or perceived age issues; it’s important to look at it all.

Third: Now we can look at what kind of business or businesses would be appropriate for you considering all of the above. It’s very important to have diversified income sources and residual income BUT we need to plan. A good business rule is get one plate spinning at a time! Every business needs to have at least three different ways to drive traffic to your internet/web home based business. So we talk about those and set them up one at a time.

Some of the most common things people talk you into doing are the least profitable so look at options that don’t require spending any more money than is necessary to make YOUR Business Grow. (I’d normally stay away from pay per click, Google ad words, Ezine articles (at least in the beginning) and NEVER buy LEADS), don’t get me going there or I’ll write you a book on Why Not To Buy Leads!!!

The tools and support systems you choose will be critical to your success. Whenever possible work with a Franchise (that is a business that has a readymade web page and they handle shipping to the client) NEVER carry anything with inventory and be extremely with dealing with drop shipping. Your franchise business should be something you can really believe in, heart and soul. Otherwise you are selling to others products and services that you yourself don’t believe in.

There is also the type of marketing offered. The old traditional way of talk to your family and friends, co-workers and church members and every stray on the street is still out there, but there are much more profitable and professional approaches with a work at home business. Update yourself to Online Marketing and catch the internet wave of increasing sales of products and services. See You at the Top!
