There are white hat SEO and there are black hat SEO. White hat SEO is all about integrity and staying within Google webmaster guideline. Search engines do want us to promote our sites, as long as we stay within guidelines.

Some feel they can maintain their integrity while manipulating search engines in a gray area, not violating any laws and not deceiving any individuals for profit. Some link building is a world more honorable than some of the marketing schemes you can find even on the sponsored ads in these pages.
There’s a theory that, along with gaining search engine ranking from incoming links, too many outgoing links can leak link juice, noFollow links are believed to not impart credit to the destination site, hence no juice leak. The primary reason for noFollow links is to improve the quality of the membership by discouraging graffiti style backlink generation by people uninterested in the forum, just there to enhance their search ranking. Webmasters initially acting as a public service by imparting dofollow credit to comment links left on their blog often re-enable noFollow after their site has appeared on doFollow site lists and is deluged with robot comments they find themselves spending too much time editing out.
Some of the more offensive seo practices that may well damage your site ranking, )bearing in mind that search engines are aware of malicious competitors giving a competing site bad inlinks in an attempt to sabotage their search ranking):
* Paid links that are detected to be made for profit.
* Link exchanges, 2 way exchanges are always found, more elaborate schemes might get by.
* Bad neighborhood links, from sites with unapproved ontent, using blackhat traffic techniques
again, due to the malicious 3rd party possibilities these links will generally be ignored, but your site linking out to bad neighborhoods is more certain to do damage.
* Any unnatural link patterns may cause the links to not be credited, too many links appearing at a time, particularly for a new domain, links from a single type of source, like all forum signatures and nothing else.
