Get Ready For Your Own Small Business

Starting a Home Based Business Takes Preparation
By Bob Hamilton

Many would-be home based business entrepreneurs find the list of choices almost beyond belief. They find there are so many businesses to choose from that they can not make a selection even though they know they want a business of their own. Instead they remain frozen, and take no action. They stay with a current job, and give up their desire to strike out on their own. Don’t let this happen to you. Taking action is the hardest and most important step if you seek to become your own boss.

Be sure you are cut out to be your own boss. Many would-be entrepreneurs find they really don’t want to strike out on their own when they begin to really understand the investment and risks associated with owning their own business. Be sure you have what it takes. It is better to say you will not move forward as you gain an understanding of the time, money and personal sacrifice involved rather than to move forward even when you know a home based business is not the right answer for you.

Develop a list of your strengths and skills. Often the perfect home based business is as close as the strengths and skills you already possess. It is just a matter of understand what you have to offer and then matching those strengths and skills to the right business opportunity.

Thoroughly examine a business opportunity before making a commitment. Understand the costs, the risks and the exact skills required. Be sure you understand the full scope of your time and money commitment. Also understand not only the risks, but also the potential rewards. It makes no sense to move forward with an opportunity requiring more from you than you are able to commit.

Develop a business plan before you start. Some who are preparing to start a home based business will question whether it’s worth the investment of time and effort to develop a business plan. Still others will avoid doing anything because they have never developed a business plan before, and they are afraid of the unknown. This is a mistake. Take the initiative to develop a business plan before you begin your business.

Seek the advice and support of an expert. There’s no need to make this move alone. Seek the help of a knowledgeable paid or volunteer expert to help walk you through the decision making and start-up process. Be sure the person providing advice is an expert regarding the step being addressed. Remember you are the final decision maker, so the inputs and advice are just that. Make decisions you are comfortable will lead to the long term goals you have in mind.
