How to Overcome the Fear of Start your Own Business

Don’t Let Your Dream of Starting Up Your Own Small Business Be Derailed by Fear
By Mark Bergman

So you would like to startup a new small business, but find a million and one reasons not to. To name just a few:

  • The economy is bad right now. I’ll wait until things get better
  • You feel you don’t have the funding or perhaps do not have access to funding
  • The lack of experience running your own small business
  • You do not have enough time
  • Will this small business make enough money to be able to feed my family
  • The working hours needed to run the business will be too long

The real underlying reason is actually more simple, but very powerful. Fear. It paralysis us all and prevents us from moving forwards.
Fear is found in many guises. One such form of fear you may feel is the fear of failure. This is very common. What will your friends and family think of you. You gave up what seemed like a good job and start this new small business and it just does not work out as you expected. Can you ever face anyone ever again?

As President Roosevelt once told the US nation “we have nothing to fear but fear itself.” How true, but no less difficult to overcome.

There are a number of ways to overcome this fear of starting up. One way is planning and preparation. Do your homework. Find out as much as you can about the products you wish to sell, the markets, the competition and really get to understand what you are getting yourself into. Understand the expected costs, the expected issues, the amount of time that will be required of you to make it work. Perhaps this may take the form of a very detailed business plan. If you are to get funding from a financial institution they will want one anyway. A good understanding and a solid plan will help you get a better sense of perspective, so that you can give the new startup a fair chance of success.

What overcoming fear boils down to is confidence. Confidence in one’s own ability to startup on your own. Although it seems trite and overused today, the ability to have a positive attitude is essential. Seeing the glass half full instead of half empty. As much as one wishes it, starting up a new small business will have its ups and downs and one needs to have a fair bit of emotional fortitude to weather the storms, and realize that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Being able to view your startup business in the correct perspective is another essential element. You need to be able to understand at what stage your business is at and that certain issues and events are just part of the norm when running a new business and that these are almost to be expected.

Finally the statistics speak volumes when it comes to small business startups. More than half of businesses in the USA today are small businesses. No large corporation ever started out being large. Once, someone had the vision to start up and the perseverance to hang in to make it happen. Remember that it has been done before countless times in the past and will be done countless times in the future. So don’t let fear take hold and prevent you from getting on with it!

I agree that starting a small biz even online is really scary. But the right attitude (as you pointed out) can go a long way. Dedicate yourself to your goals, have a clear understanding of what you want to achieve and how you will achieve it will give you that much needed confidence to start an enterprise whether it be online or off the Interwebs.
