Freelance Work may be Your Best Option

What is the Definition of Freelance Work?

Freelance Magic

A common question, “What is the definition of freelance work” can be answered very simply – it is work offered on a part time basis to more than one company or individual.

When times are hard, whether because of the general economic climate or because of a particular need (a holiday, for example) most people have a skill or ability that they can offer. Something as simple as dog walking can often produce good financial rewards. Naturally, most people can walk a dog but how many would think of offering that service on a freelance, paid-for basis?

The number of small jobs that many people would happily pay someone else to do has often been a great source of charity collections. Think about ‘bob-a-job’ if you are British or cookie sales to raise funds if you are American.

What can you do that other people might rather pay to have done for them? Sweeping the drive? Mowing the lawn? Weeding the garden? Trimming the hedges? Cleaning out the garage? Cleaning the cooker? Cleaning the house? Cleaning the car? Polishing brasses? There is no end to the domestic work that a competent freelance worker cannot turn into a source of cash.

A major benefit of the vast majority of domestic tasks is that they are recurring. Sweep the drive on Monday and the chances are it will need doing again on Wednesday. Weed the garden on Sunday, next Sunday it will need doing again.

It is this general nature of most freelance work that makes it such a successful option for most people to add to or even replace their income.

How many skills do you have that you can provide to others? Can you teach a language? Can you write letters? Can you deal with authorities? Can you build shelves and cupboards into rooms? Can you repair roofs? Can you maintain a motor car in good condition? You could probably create a list of things that you can do to an acceptable level that would enable you to offer something to just about anybody you know or meet.

So, what is the definition of freelance work – it is work that you can do for others who do not want to do it themselves – and get paid for it!

If you have a skill that you are particularly proficient at, you could create a small market for yourself specializing in that skill. Maybe you have a way with words? Probably one of the biggest groups of freelancers is writers. When you think about it, you are surrounded by the written word. Just about everywhere you look you will see something that somebody else has written – even if it is only the contents on a food container.

If you look at your local newspapers and magazines, how much of the content, do you suppose, has been written by freelance writers? If you were to submit a piece of written work, do you suppose that there is a chance it will be published? If it was good enough and in a category the newspaper or magazine particularly concentrated on, do you suppose they might pay you to write more?

Freelance workers are always in demand and freelance work is always available – why not give some thought to getting your share?
