The Importance of Motivation for Bussines Success
Maintain Your Motivation to Succeed in Your Business
By Tammie J
One of the hardest things about starting your own business is maintaining motivation, both in your business venture and, for those of you who continue to work, in your outside professional life. There will be days when staying motivated in your business will be extremely difficult, especially in the beginning, when you are working to build your business, and progress can seem extremely slow, or there appear to be setbacks, obstacles, and not nearly enough time to get everything done.
Likewise, there will be days in your professional life when you have a difficult time focusing on the task at hand because you feel that you’re losing valuable time that you could be spending on your own business, but need the job to pay the bills.
How do you maintain your motivation at times like these? How do you keep up the momentum necessary to work all day in the outside world, and then, go home and work all evening towards your own goals? There are some very basic steps you can take to ensure that you can keep up the pace long enough to get where you want to go!
First and perhaps foremost, don’t sacrifice too much sleep for progress. Staying up late into the night building the newest website, writing a couple of articles, or researching the newest trend will only ruin the next day. And, lack of sleep will affect your attitude, both at your “real” job and in your business.
Secondly, eat well. Don’t be tempted to drive through a fast food restaurant on your way home at night, just to have that extra twenty minutes time to work on your business. Take the time to prepare proper meals, both for yourself and your family (if you have one). Proper nutrition affects your overall attitude, too.
Third, don’t slack on your exercise. Spending hours in front of the computer screen leads to fatigue, and can bring on serious health problems, including carpal tunnel syndrome, eye strain, back and leg problems, etc. Protect yourself against these illnesses with a regular exercise regime. Take that walk after dinner. Go for a short run. Ride a bike. Go to the gym. Whatever gets you up and moving!
Fourth, don’t neglect important relationships in your life. Your spouse, your kids, your friends, your family, and even your dog can start to feel very neglected if you spend literally all of your time in front of your computer, even if you’re “doing it for” one of them. Maintain an active social life, even if it means it takes an extra three months to accomplish your goals in your business.
And, finally, don’t neglect your mental health. Set a regular schedule for your business and stick to it. When it’s time to sit down and work for a few hours, do so. Likewise, when it’s “quitting time,” stop. Go do something that you enjoy. Read a book (and not one related to your business, either). Watch a movie. Take a nap on a Sunday afternoon. Whatever you most enjoy doing, go do it.
If you maintain the proper balance in your business, professional, and personal life, you’ll actually end up accomplishing more when you are working, and you just might find that you’re more successful faster than if you had sacrificed more time to your cause. And, if nothing else, you’ll have a much more healthy attitude, which creates the motivation you need to keep up the pace!
